2021 Summer is Expected to be Normal

Banners hang in downtown Vacaville promoting the creekwalk concerts every Friday night.

The biggest question looming on California’s citizens’ minds leading into the summer is, “Will we be back to normal? Will I be able to do what I did two summers ago?”

Governor Gavin Newsom has held multiple press conferences; but the decisions about re-opening will  mainly rely on how the number of infected individuals changes, and whether or not numbers of vaccinated persons continue to rise. However all signs lead to a fully opened California in mid June.

“It is time to turn the page on our tier system and begin looking to fully reopen California’s economy,” Governor Newsom said at a press conference in April.

Many of California’s main tourist and summer attractions, such as Disneyland, Six Flags, and Golfland have been open since April. All of these main attractions require masks and social distancing, along with smaller party sizes. Capacity at these parks is also reduced from previous normal numbers.

Disneyland reopened on April 30, with many restrictions and limitations including only California residents admitted, groups no larger than three families, and face masks along with temperature screenings.

But out in public the mask requirements and mandate has been altered. California is coinciding with the Center for Disease Control (CDC) new guidelines.

“If one is fully vaccinated, outdoors, and not in a large crowd of people they are no longer required to wear a mask,” Governor Newsom said, “Let’s do this. Vax up, CA!!” Newsom said in a tweet on April 27, 2021.

Back home in Vacaville, the normal summer events are back on this year. The traditional Friday night Creekwalk Concerts are back, along with the Saturday morning Farmers Market.

“I like the sense of community these events create,” senior Metina Cassinelli said. “My favorite part is when good bands play.”

Masks are still required to attend these events, despite their being outdoors, but the hope is that the more people get vaccinated the sooner these restrictions become optional.

All signs point to a more “normal” summer which we all desire.
